<p>As part of the <a href="/resources/glossary/define-department-of-transportation-us-department-of-transportation-dot">Department of Transportation (<abbr title="Department of Transportation">DOT</abbr>)</a>, the FAA regulates the safety of civil and commercial aviation; develops new aviation technology, develops and operates a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft, researches and develops the National Airspace system and civil aeronautics and carries out programs involved in the environmental effects of civil aviation.</p>
